Merci Jesu
This week while I was in Haiti, I had a morning ritual of getting up with the cock-a-doodle-do of the roosters and heading up to the rooftop of the school on the grounds where we were staying. It was there that I was closer to the sky, had the million dollar view of the rising sun, watched as the day unfolded in the village below. It was there that I felt the presence of God the most. I would focus on the sounds that I heard. Sometimes there was the pounding of a drum, the crying of a child, the barking of a dog. Sometimes there was just the whistling of the wind. And other times there was an idea that popped into my head…a simple Angel Whisper.
You never know exactly how a mission trip will change you. Sure, it’s not exactly comfortable taking a cold shower each day. But I was able to clean myself. It was not clear to me what I was eating each time I had a meal. But I was fed. I didn’t know Creole to speak with the people. But love is a universal language so we connected beautifully. There are so many luxuries that we are afforded in a first world country that get stripped from you when you enter a third world country. Yet, somehow none of that matters when you share the love of Jesus with another person.
Each night when I would lie in bed and reflect on the day’s events and how they impacted me, I realized that I encountered countless angels. They came in the form of a child pushing her forehead against mine, a young woman getting up at 4am to make sure I had a breakfast sandwich, or as a devout Christian missionary gifting me with my first stole to encourage me in my ministry. And just as I felt the presence of God on that rooftop, I would see the face of Jesus in each of these people. My week in Haiti was filled with Angel Whispers.
A verse that appeared to me several times this week was this one: “A new heart I will give you, and a new spirit I will put within you: and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful to observe my ordinances.” – Ezekiel 36:26-27. My heart was changed this week and for that I am grateful. Merci Jesu
